The St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School Panthers are league champions after a thrilling 35-28 comeback win against La Citadelle Patriotes. Down 28-14 entering the fourth quarter, the Panthers refused to back down, storming back with grit and determination. “The defense locked in to give the offense good field position. Everyone was so pumped to win,” said defensive end Kyle Malyon.
For defensive coach Ralph Theodore, the win was especially sweet. After two consecutive defeats to La Citadelle, including a 41-7 blowout last year, this victory marked redemption. “It was a great feeling to finally get that monkey off our back-and to win it at home made it even better,” said Theodore.
The turnaround, he says, came in part from the leadership of new offensive coordinator “Coach Sonny,” a military reservist and veteran coach with experience in both Canadian and American leagues. Quarterback Matt Lewis earned MVP praise from the coaching staff, with strong support from the offensive line.
The Panthers defeated Holy Trinity 30-0 in the semifinal to advance. Up next, the Panthers head to Queen’s University for the Limestone Invitational, where they’ll face Woodbridge College.
