The number of Employment Insurance recipients in the fives eastern counties has increased by 190 since last year, moist recent figures released by the Eastern Ontario Training Board show.
In August of this year 3,260 people in Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry and Prescott-Russell were receiving EI, an increase from 3,070 in August of 2024. The number of female recipients rose from 1,990 in 2024 to 2,030 this year while the number of male recipients went from 1,080 to 1,230.
The largest demographic among all recipients is women aged 25 to 54, accounting for a total of 1,330 recipients.
Meanwhile, the unemployment rate in Eastern Ontario dipped by .5 per cent in October, reaching 5.1 per cent. That was lower than the Ottawa rate of 7.4 per cent and the provincial rate of 7.6 per cent. The health care and social assistance sectors continue to grow in terms of employment opportunities. The number of jobs in these sectors in Eastern Ontario was 7,673 in 2025. That number is projected to be 8,196 in 2028.
