North Dundas District High School (NDDHS) has won the national 2025 Forged by Youth Award, earning $15,000 from the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) Foundation for an innovative student-built mini ice resurfacer.
The project, completed by the school’s Manufacturing Technology class, transformed a plywood feed cart into a functional ice resurfacer. It debuted at a North Dundas Rockets playoff game last spring and has since become a fixture at home games and community events.
“This project is a true example of hands-on, real-world learning,” said teacher Andrew Whitton. “The skills our students developed, from problem-solving to precision welding, are ones they’ll carry with them for life.”
Grade 12 student Sam Dean, who built the five-bend nose cone, said, “Even when you don’t think you’re learning much, you’re actually learning so much.” Fellow student Brady Casselman added, “It was a really cool experience to be part of something that will be seen around the community.”
The award funds will help NDDHS purchase a new inverter welder to enhance future welding education.
