Mental Health Week kicked off in Cornwall with two high-energy Zumba classes hosted by “Zumba with Christal,” drawing large crowds on Blue Monday (January 19) and again for Bell Let’s Talk Day (January 21). Both free events were held at Bridgewood Public School in partnership with CMHA Champlain East and Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH).
Instructor Christal Bowen said, “Beat the Winter Blues was everything we hoped for and so much more. A packed house, incredible energy, nonstop smiles, and so many new faces walking through the doors… it was powerful.” Participants were encouraged to wear blue and take part in journaling as a mental wellness activity. Each attendee received a journal donated by CCH, with a personal handwritten message from Bowen. “Keep journaling. Keep writing. Keep giving yourself that space-it’s powerful, it’s healing, and it matters,” she added. CMHA’s Angele D’Alessio praised the event and its organizer: “It was an amazing feeling to be part of a week dedicated to Mental Health led by our Champion and recent Community Impact Award winner Christal Bowen.” This Mental Health Week proved that even in winter, the community can bring the heat.
