The City of Cornwall and the Cornwall Police Service are asking residents for help following recent acts of vandalism at the new Cornwall Youth Park at Alexander Park and the Bandshell in Lamoureux Park.
The city said vandalism diverts staff from regular maintenance and improvements while sometimes forcing temporary closures of damaged areas for safety reasons.
Larry Legue, Supervisor of Parks for the City of Cornwall, confirmed that security cameras at the Bandshell captured the incident. “I can confirm that the security cameras at the Bandshell were fully operational, and we have identified the incident as having occurred during the evening of May 10,” said Legue. “Footage of the vandalism has been secured and is currently being processed to assist Cornwall Police Services with their investigation.”
Legue said city staff moved quickly to clean and restore the damaged areas. “Our Parks and Recreation team acted quickly to restore the affected areas at both the Bandshell and Alexander Park,” he said. “Treating the surfaces with specialized graffiti remover, pressure-washing, and steam-cleaning at both sites took approximately 11 hours combined.”
He added that vandalism impacts the community as a whole. “Acts of vandalism like this are very disheartening, which is why maintaining our parks in good condition remains a priority. This ensures all members of the public can continue to enjoy safe, welcoming, and well-cared-for community spaces.”
CPS Acting Chief Chad Maxwell said police have seen an increase in vandalism and mischief in parks and public areas.
“The Cornwall Police Service has seen a concerning increase in acts of mischief and vandalism occurring in local parks and public spaces,” said Maxwell. He added that officers will increase proactive patrols around parks during evening and overnight hours and warned that people responsible for vandalism and related offences “can expect to be charged accordingly.”
Police are also encouraging residents to report suspicious or unlawful activity to help hold offenders accountable and keep public spaces safe.
