The Editor,
The Liberal government has announced ambitious high-speed rail projects connecting Ontario and Quebec.
While modern transportation infrastructure is important, Canadians must ask whether this project represents the best use of public resources at a time when so many urgent challenges remain unresolved.
These rail plans could require the expropriation of private land, placing significant burdens on farming communities, rural landowners, and local economies.
The concerns of those directly affected deserve careful consideration and meaningful consultation.
At the same time, Canadians continue to face overcrowded hospitals, aging infrastructure, housing shortages, rising costs of living, and growing pressure on essential public services.
Many citizens are struggling to access the services they rely on every day.
Before committing billions of dollars to a major rail expansion project, the government should demonstrate that core public priorities are being adequately addressed.
Investments in healthcare, housing, infrastructure, and affordability should take precedence over large-scale projects whose benefits remain uncertain to many Canadians.
Governments have a responsibility to ensure that limited public resources are directed first toward the most pressing needs of citizens.
Major expansion projects should be pursued only after essential services and infrastructure have received the attention and investment they require.
