Two young siblings have turned their summer project, Cans for Cause, into an inspiring community success story. Emery and Sophia collected over 60,000 returnable cans and bottles, raising an incredible $6,035 for the Roger Neilson Children’s Hospice in Ottawa-an organization close to their hearts.
“I wanted to give back to the people who helped me when my brother was sick,” said 9-year-old Emery, reflecting on their motivation to honour their late brother, Emil.
Sophia, 7, added, “The fundraiser turned out good. We ended up raising way more money than we thought.” “I liked pushing the boxes at the beer store and putting the cans through the machine at Metro,” she added.
Through “Cans for Cause,” they learned the value of giving-and saw how a community can rally behind a cause.
“My favourite part was meeting new people, going to pick up cans throughout the community,” said Emery. “I also enjoyed going to the beer store and seeing the total amount.”
Their mother, Cindylynn Lacelle, shared, “At just 7 and 9, they’ve shown incredible strength, determination, and even teamwork-as siblings!”
Sophia and Emery are already planning next summer’s Cans for Cause campaign to raise even more for the children’s hospice.
