Orange Shirt Day returns to Lamoureux Park for its fourth year on Monday, September 30, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., bringing the community together to honour residential school survivors and celebrate Indigenous culture through dancing, drumming, singing, food, and educational activities.
The day, inspired by Phyllis Webstad’s story of having her new orange shirt taken away on her first day at residential school, serves as a solemn reminder that “Every Child Matters.”
“Orange Shirt Day is more than a day of remembrance, it’s a day of commitment,” said Kim Herne of the Akwesasne Representative and Advocacy Program. “We gather at Lamoureux Park to honor those who survived, remember those who did not, and pledge ourselves to the ongoing work of reconciliation.”
The free event is organized in partnership with Akwesasne Child and Family Services, Native North American Travelling College, Children’s Aid Society of SDG, and others. Proceeds from orange shirt sales will benefit the Akwesasne Freedom School. Cornwall Transit will provide free rides to support access.
