About 40 people braved the rain outside Cornwall City Hall on Monday for an information picket organized by CUPE 1792. The demonstrators, carrying signs and umbrellas, gathered ahead of the scheduled council meeting to protest proposed staffing cuts at Glen Stor Dun Lodge. The action followed a rally along Montreal Road earlier in September as workers sought to maintain pressure on council.
Union members said the “new schedule” management planned to implement would reduce staffing, directly impacting care for residents. “Management was saying that there are no cuts, but clearly there will be,” said CUPE 1792 President Aileen Raven. “We need to keep up the pressure so council knows they need to put more resources into the lodge so that residents can get the quality of care they deserve. It’s not just about budget. It’s about human rights.”
The union encouraged residents to write letters to councillors, urging increased staffing resources at the municipally run home.
Deputy CAO/Fire Chief Matthew Stephenson replied that, “Recent updates to the staffing schedule at the Glen Stor Dun Lodge are designed to improve consistency across all shifts, reduce reliance on agency staff, and ensure appropriate coverage for our residents’ increasingly complex needs.
