SDG Counties’ Council is hoping to establish increased honorariums to better reflect the commitment of time and burden of meetings for each of the Council members. SDG Counties’ Staff reviews the remuneration of Council each four-year term and a bylaw must be passed to enact any changes.
When comparing rates to other municipalities and populations, SDG Counties Warden and Council members are among the lower groups being reimbursed. In efforts to establish more equitable amounts, an average of salaries was estimated arriving at $52,518 for the Warden and $22,014 for Councillors to be considered.
In addition, other adjustments are being weighed for consideration by SDG Council and staff, to bring honorariums more in line with current costs. Included with the honorariums are: the Council Meeting Allowance, removing the half-day meeting rate & maintaining only the standard meeting rate; increasing the conference rate per day to $675 for Council members for accommodation, transportation and meals, up to a maximum of $2,025, but not including the cost for registration for the conference; as well as increasing the per diem rates according to the SDG Counties Personnel Policy. The budget for the Warden’s Banquet has also been increased to $7,000; however, a significant portion of the costs for the banquet is offset by ticket sales for the event.
The proposed adjustments being considered by SDG Counties’ Council better reflect compensation rates for comparable municipalities in Ontario and will hopefully be approved to take effect in 2026.
