The City of Cornwall marked a major milestone with the ribbon cutting for its new Municipal Works Multi-Use Garage and Administration Building on Ontario Street, the latest phase in a yard redevelopment that began in 2016.
Together, the two buildings represent an investment of about $25 million. The two-storey administration building, completed earlier this year, cost roughly $10.98 million with HST and provides 13,000 square feet of net-zero-ready office and support space.
The new 30,000-square-foot multi-use garage, valued at about $14.94 million with HST, replaces several aging structures and is designed to support municipal operations for decades.
General Manager of Infrastructure and Municipal Works Michael Fawthrop said the project is about much more than pouring concrete. “This new Municipal Works multi-use garage and administration building is more than just a facility – it represents collaboration, planning, and a shared commitment to improving services for our residents,” he said, thanking staff, contractors, and council for seeing the vision through.
The redevelopment has already seen older administration, water and sewer, traffic, and salt storage buildings removed, along with park and road structures, and a tire shed, as part of the current phase.
Some facilities will stay in service but be repurposed: the former garage will become heated equipment storage until a future phase, while the existing water and sewer building will be used for equipment and materials.
CAO Tim Mills said the consolidated yard will help front-line teams respond more efficiently when snow flies or infrastructure needs attention. Within the new facilities, staff from roads, parks and landscaping, water and sewer, facilities and garage operations can now work side by side, which Mills said is critical to creating “safer and more efficient work environments” for employees who keep roads clear, water flowing, and essential services running in Cornwall.
