Montreal-based metal artist Mona Rutenberg brought her imaginative welded steel sculptures to life at the Cline House Gallery’s Creative Conservatory in Cornwall, where she was featured artist from August 14 to September 6. Using found objects like broken tools and industrial scraps, Rutenberg transforms discarded materials into elegant, whimsical forms inspired by nature.
“I’ve been sculpting most of my life, but welding specifically for the last 15 years,” said Rutenberg. “I grew up surrounded by oily machines and rusted metal-my father sold industrial equipment-so I’ve always felt at home in that environment.”
Her process blends spontaneity and storytelling.
“Seventy percent of the time, it’s the piece that inspires me. I collect elements I like, and they start speaking to each other-like putting together an outfit,” Rutenberg explained.
A retired art therapist, Rutenberg now devotes her time to playful experimentation. “To put a piece of art outside is the greatest,” she said. “Many of my floral steel pieces live right in the garden.”
