In a gesture of reconciliation, the RCMP Cornwall Detachment unveiled a Land Acknowledgement Plaque on September 24, recognizing the territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka people.
Designed by Akwesasro:non artist Ian Clute of Two House Design-Crafters, the plaque honours the cultural heritage and enduring connection of the Mohawk people to the land.
The ceremony brought together local and regional leadership, including Grand Chief Leonard Lazore, senior RCMP officials from London, and Cornwall Detachment staff. Their participation emphasized the importance of building respectful relationships and acknowledging historical truths.
As part of the ceremony, the RCMP presented a Tree of Peace to Grand Chief Lazore, a symbol rooted in Haudenosaunee teachings. In return, Lazore gifted the RCMP a pouch of tobacco, a gesture of cultural significance and mutual respect.
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne acknowledged the unveiling as a meaningful gesture and expressed hope for continued collaboration with the RCMP. The event highlighted the RCMP’s commitment to truth and reconciliation, and to ensuring Indigenous voices remain central to their ongoing work.
