SDG Tourism is calling on residents to help preserve the legacy of the Historic SDG Jail by donating artefacts and sharing stories. Formerly the Cornwall Jail, the facility operated for over a century before closing in 2002 and is now a key tourist attraction.
To enhance its exhibits, officials are seeking items like locks, shackles, security equipment, uniforms, badges, contraband, documents, photos, and videos. These contributions will support new displays and future publications.
“Every object and every story has the potential to bring this historic site to life in new ways,” said Becky Ranger, Historic SDG Jail coordinator.
A special intake day is scheduled for Sunday, October 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the jail, located at 11 Water Street West in Cornwall. Those unable to attend can arrange an appointment by emailing jail@sdgcounties.ca or calling 1-844-814-JAIL.
“The Cornwall Jail is an important piece of our shared history,” Ranger added. “By working with the community, we can preserve its stories and strengthen the connection between past and present.”
