The 32nd Annual River Symposium, titled “Changing Waters,” hosted by the St. Lawrence River Institute, drew around 150 in-person attendees, global livestream viewers, and presenters focused on protecting freshwater ecosystems amid climate threats.
“Bringing people from different sectors of society is incredibly important if we’re going to maintain or improve the integrity of ecosystems in the St. Lawrence River,” said keynote speaker Dr. Stephen Lougheed, Queen’s University biologist.
“It’s about mitigation and restoration-but also about ensuring the areas that remain intact stay that way,” Lougheed added. “We still have remarkable biodiversity here, and local communities, including First Nations, are working hard to protect it.”
The event featured eight themed sessions on issues from invasive species to shoreline restoration, plus youth-led initiatives and an art contest.
River Strategy Coordinator Emilie DeRochie praised the turnout and engagement: “Our theme is changing waters-how our ecosystems are shifting and how we can adapt together.”
