A new sport took off in Cornwall, literally, as local tech innovator Aero Concept Systems Inc. officially launched DroneSport, a high-tech competitive platform turning drones into active players. The November 6 debut at the Benson Centre marked the first public demonstration of what organizers believe will be a global game-changer in youth recreation, innovation, and fundraising.
“We are launching a brand-new sport in the world, and we’re launching it from Cornwall,” said Paul St-Onge, president of Aero Concept Systems Inc. and founder of DroneSport. “It allows you to be part of the experience no matter how old you are, how young you are, or what your gender is. It’s fully inclusive.”
DroneSport features a series of competitions — racing, net-and-goal games, obstacle courses — played by drones dressed in uniquely designed jerseys. The sport can be set up in a backyard, field, gym, or arena and is flexible by design.
The launch has drawn international attention with support from DJI, the world’s largest drone manufacturer. The DJI Neo was named the official MVP drone for the inaugural event, and a new jersey designed specifically for drones was also unveiled.
Local organizations are already getting on board. Larry Harper, Governor for Central Ontario District Optimist Clubs, confirmed three clubs,Seaway, Stormont, and Lancaster, are renting DroneSport equipment with the plan to host fundraising tournaments for youth programs.
“I see this as an opportunity that could go right around the world,” said Harper, who is set to present the concept to 46 additional Optimist clubs and at the group’s international conference in Florida. “It’s a very different and exciting way to reach youth who are tech-savvy.”
The next major DroneSport event is the inaugural tournament, scheduled for December 27-28, at the Benson Centre in Cornwall. Local training workshops will also be announced soon at www.dronesport.ca.
