The Seaway Valley Theatre Company is unwrapping a golden ticket for its 20th anniversary season with the children’s musical “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka JR.” at Aultsville Theatre December 6, at 1:30 and 4 p.m., and December 7, at 1:30 p.m.
Based on Dahl’s classic story and the 1971 film, the show follows five children who find golden tickets hidden in Willy Wonka’s candy bars and earn a tour of his mysterious factory.
Four winners push every rule, while kind-hearted Charlie Bucket and his grandfather try to navigate Wonka’s world of temptation and consequence.
Director Corey Disotell says the junior version balances the novel’s edge with a playful tone. “Even with darker elements, the heart of the story remains imagination,” he explained. “As characters meet their fate, the audience will recognize the lesson but experience it through humour and spectacle.”
Disotell praised his young cast.
“The children were perfectly cast to portray the different range of emotions and personalities each character has,” he said, recalling an early rehearsal where the youth playing Mr. Salt suddenly screamed in fear. “You wouldn’t expect it from that character; however, it fits in perfectly within the scene.”
Kiana Seitz and Dana Power make their SVTC choreographing debut, with Josée Julien and Bernadette Piché-Proulx producing alongside apprentice Wade Wilson.
Returning vocal director Stephanie St. Louis helps bring familiar numbers to life. “Adults and some children coming to the show will expect such classics as ‘Pure Imagination,’ ‘The Candy Man’ and ‘I’ve Got a Golden Ticket,'” Disotell noted. “As long as we capture curiosity, imagination, wonder, chaos, and sweetness, we can take risks, reinvent movements, and bring new theatrical magic.”
Reserved seats can be purchased in advance at svtc.theticketwicket.ca or 613-933-3998, with limited tickets available at the door. Aultsville Theatre is wheelchair accessible.
