Jim Fourney, from Martintown Masonic Lodge 596, wanted to raise funds for the community with a focus on helping youth.
Since Fourney runs a home bakery, he decided he could put his baking talents to help that cause. He called in additional help from volunteer members of the Martintown Masonic Lodge, in particular Bob and Don Blackadder, as well as his family, and together, they put on a spread of sandwiches, baked treats and endless cups of tea and coffee. Tins of festive cookies, along with Fourney’s famous butter tarts, were also on sale.
Ladies who attended the tea wearing fascinators were given a gift of butter tarts. The South Glengarry Pipe Band, under the leadership of Pipe Major Steve MacDougald, entertained the guests at the tea with favourites tunes. Then Heather Flipsen and Friends, including Bob Cleary and Mike Schram, played some toe-tapping Celtic music on the fiddle, guitar and bass.
This is the third year for the Masonic Tea, which this year raised $1,000. With that sum and funds generated through a barbecue at the Raisin River Canoe Race, Masons support the Martintown Mill and help with bursaries for students at Char-Lan District High School.
