Each month from December to March, the SD&G Historical Society will be hosting a Speaker Series with some of the fascinating stories that make up the rich history of our area.
December 10, author John Sliter will share his experiences in writing “The Matriarchs of the Hoople Creek Loyalists.” This book features a series of historical fiction stories about seventeen women and their families who settled along Hoople Creek after the American Revolution.
Sliter will share his motivation for writing about these women and how his book intertwines historical facts with compelling narratives of these exceptional women, telling their stories in the first person and letting us hear their stories as if they were here today. After a career in the RCMP, Sliter returned to the Ingleside area where he grew up near Hoople Creek. He became interested in protecting the creek and set up a Friends of Hoople Creek Society to develop environmental programs. This led him to become intrigued by the history of the creek which led him to discover these fascinating women which he introduces in his book.
The next event is January 20, when author and retired police officer, Thom Racine, will speak on the History of Sport in Cornwall. Thom recently released a book entitled “The Miracle Maid” that details the mystery of why and how local hockey star Albertine Lapensée disappeared.
February 17 Jim Brownell will share his many stories on the Lost Villages. He is a former MPP and history teacher who has spent decades preserving the memory of the Lost Villages. Brownell has authored A Tour Through the Lands of the Lost Villages and hosted many sold-out bus tours along the Lost Villages route.
March 10 Cornwall Community Museum curator and historian Don Smith will speak on the impact of the St. Lawrence River on Cornwall and area.
He will weave into his presentation not only the story of the river, but also the remarkable stories about the industries, people and places associated with the river over the past few hundred years.
All presentations will be held in the Back Room at Schnitzels Restaurant starting at 7 p.m.
Each evening will consist of a 45-minute presentation followed by a Q&A session. Details can be found at cornwallcommunitymuseum.ca
