North Glengarry Council recently received an update on the pool facilities located at Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital (HGMH).
While residents are happy to have to pool facilities available, municipal council is concerned about the high operating costs.
Stephanie MacRae, Director of Community Services, reported that expenses came in just over $83,000, with salaries for the lifeguard responsible for most of that amount. Revenue for 2025 was just over $42,000. Councillors feel that the pool provides a great service to the community, but that the costs are just too high and the revenues not close enough for the break even plan as was intended when the partnership between the Township and HGMH was established in 2023. The small size of the facility limits the number of swimmers able to participate in each class. As well, the Township is mindful of keeping the programs affordable for everyone.
MacRae says that while the costs are still within the budget, staff will continue to monitor registrations and expenses to see where improvements can be made. As well, extended registration timelines and promotion of the programs will hopefully generate more revenue.
The Township offers 32 hours of community programming at the pool, including parent and tot, senior swimming, Aquafit classes and youth swimming lessons. The facilities are also available to rent for parties or private swimming times. Through the partnership with HGMH, the Township pays for part-time lifeguards’ salaries, a uniform allowance for the lifeguards, and subsidizes computer software for booking registrants. HGMH pays for maintenance.
