The Editor,
Regarding the 2026 city budget, it will be interesting to see if any councillors will have the courage to submit any amendment motions that will address a roughly 10% increase in the police budget and nearly 6% in the overall budget.
Cost of living increases in Ontario for 2025 are projected to be around 2.5 to 2.7% and that’s the number that council should focus on. It’s time for council to take control and issue a directive to the CAO and Police Chief. The police especially understand the importance of following a directive. The directive would simply read that each department will have a cost of living increase, and that’s it. The directive needs to state that all departments must maintain the minimum standards required by provincial and municipal law and that anything in excess of the minimum standards can be considered for cuts. It’s time to take a real close look at areas of overlap and duplication, especially when it comes to sharing services with our municipal neighbours. Mark A. MacDonald, Cornwall
