A holiday classic returned to the stage in vintage style as audiences filled the Lecture Theatre at the DEV Hotel & Conference Centre for It’s a Wonderful Life – Live Radio Play, a fundraiser for the Cornwall Community Hospital’s Mental Health Program.
The production reimagined the 1946 film as a 1940s radio broadcast, complete with microphones, scripts in hand, and live sound effects.
Jimmy Malyon played George Bailey, with Angela Youngs as Mary Hatch and Adriane Forrester as Zuzu. Lacie Petrynka covered several parts, including Violet and George’s mother, while Frank Burelle and Jamie Carr each juggled multiple roles, from guardian angel Clarence to Mr. Potter and Uncle Billy. Music was provided by Gilles Levac, with Cameron Forrester on foley and Glen Forrester running sound and lighting.
“We have been doing the play for 10 years. It’s based on the classic movie, and the original cast actually performed it as a radio play after the film was released,” said Carr, who also organized the event.
“My favourite part is playing multiple characters having conversations with each other and trying to keep track of each voice while making it sound authentic.”
Carr said the cast also pulled the crowd into the fun, inviting audience members to shout lines and help create sound effects, including the famous broken window.
So far, this year’s performance has raised a little over $1,500 for the hospital’s mental health services, with final totals still being counted.
