Citizens for Marshland Conservation (CMC) has been awarded the prestigious Steve Hounsell Greenway Award by Ontario Nature, recognizing its grassroots efforts to protect McLennan Marsh in Lancaster. The award was accepted by CMC vice-chair Al Quinsey at a recent ceremony in Toronto. The award honours individuals or groups who strengthen ecological connectivity by preserving vital habitat corridors across Ontario. CMC was celebrated for its success in securing the McLennan Marsh’s designation as a Provincially Significant Wetland, ensuring long-term protection for species at risk and migratory birds. “This award is a testament to the dedication of our volunteers,” said board chairperson Yvon Duchesne. “Our collective efforts have preserved critical habitat and inspired our community.”
Ontario Nature praised CMC for its “science-based advocacy, community engagement and unwavering environmental stewardship,” echoing the legacy of Steve Hounsell’s vision for connected natural landscapes.
