Big Mac Day returned to Cornwall and Lancaster February 1, raising funds for the Children’s Treatment Centre (CTC). The community tradition, now in its third year as an organized fundraiser, sees proceeds from every Big Mac and Big Mac Meal sold at four area McDonald’s locations directed to the CTC.
The day honours Cecil and Lorraine Robertson, who opened Cornwall’s first McDonald’s in 1972. Their daughter, Pamela Bowen, reflected on how the tradition began. “My father was buried on this day,” Bowen explained. “We had family from all over, and we asked, ‘What do we have for supper before everyone heads home?’ We went with Big Macs.” That family meal turned into an annual tradition – and eventually a fundraiser.
The CTC, which marks its 30th anniversary in 2026, is a community-funded agency offering free services to children who have experienced abuse. Board member Todd Lalonde emphasized the importance: “Events like this are vital because our Centre receives no government funding.”
Pamela Bowen said her family continues the tradition across the globe. “We have family in Portugal, friends in Mexico, and relatives in Florida all celebrating Big Mac Day with us.”
