Cornwall City Council has endorsed an updated Dress Code and Hygiene Policy, which modernizes expectations around professional appearance, workplace safety, and inclusivity. The update aligns standards with current legislative requirements, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Ontario Human Rights Code, while reinforcing consistent expectations across departments and work environments.
According to a staff report, the revised policy emphasizes professional conduct, safety compliance, and accommodation provisions for religious, cultural, and disability-related needs. It also clarifies requirements related to personal protective equipment, scent-reduction practices, and role-specific hygiene standards. The policy is not expected to require any new funding, with any minimal costs covered within existing budgets.
Council also approved a new Fit for Duty Policy, establishing a framework to ensure employees report to work able to safely perform their duties. The policy focuses on physical, cognitive, and psychological fitness, recognizing factors such as fatigue, stress, medical conditions, and substance use as potential risks to safe performance.
The accompanying report notes that the policy introduces clear expectations, procedures for addressing concerns, and accommodation measures, particularly for safety-sensitive roles, while supporting employee well-being and public safety. Implementation is not expected to result in any significant new costs beyond minor training and awareness resources.
