The Cornwall Kinsmen Club once again marked Family Day with its annual free pancake breakfast, this year at the Royal Canadian Legion, drawing a steady crowd.
By opening time, families were already lined up outside. “They’re lined up at 8 o’clock to get in here this morning,” said Rick Shaver, chair of the pancake breakfast. “We usually do around 2,000 pancakes,” he added, noting enough batter is purchased for up to 2,400 pancakes.
Shaver said nearly the entire club was on hand, supported by Legion staff. “Everybody’s got a duty to do… and pancakes are flying over here.”
Kinsmen president Matt Ledrew said the event aligns with the club’s annual Day of Kindness. “It’s just two in one, so to speak. We do our Day of Kindness, we do the breakfast, we have all the events for the families.”
After breakfast, families headed to free skating at the Cornwall Civic Complex from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by a free swim at the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre from 1 to 3 p.m. “The swim and the skate, a lot of people come out for that,” Ledrew stated.
Serving Cornwall since 1933, the Kinsmen continue to fund community initiatives through events like their Mega Bingo and the return of the Kinsmen Farmers’ Market at St. Lawrence College this spring.
