A small group of students gathered recently outside Ontario Minister Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security, and Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry MPP Nolan Quinn’s office on Second Street to protest proposed changes to the Ontario Student Assistance Program. The rally called on the Ford government to maintain grant levels and keep post-secondary education affordable. Lana Watson, a Grade 12 student at St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School, said the changes would directly affect her plans. “Next year education wise, I am unable to go,” she said. “Because I can’t afford it with the cuts.” Watson said she was “really upset” when she heard about the changes. “It’s really frustrating that post-secondary education costs so much,” she added. Maxim Cousineau, a Grade 11 student at the same school, said rising costs could force him to delay further studies. “I believe that it is way too expensive… now I’m going to have to take a gap year (to work) to be able to afford the programs,” he said.
