Diversity Cornwall, a non-profit organization supporting the region’s 2SLGBTQ+ community, has welcomed Angel McCutcheon as its new Executive Director.
Founded in 2016, the group promotes inclusion through community programming, education initiatives, and public events, including annual Pride celebrations. McCutcheon said she was already familiar with the organization’s work before applying for the leadership role. Originally from Ottawa, McCutcheon moved to Cornwall after meeting her partner, who is from the area. Her professional background is rooted in social services, where she spent about five years working as a job developer in the non-profit sector. She returned to school during the COVID-19 pandemic, earning a Social Service Worker diploma through Algonquin College’s Pembroke campus. Her work in the non-profit sector later included roles as a job developer with the Petawawa Family Military Resource Centre, the March of Dimes in Ottawa, and Job Zone in Cornwall. While working in employment services, McCutcheon said she began thinking about how she could make a broader impact. “I wanted to help the community on a larger scale,” she said. “Instead of helping people find employment, I wanted to have a louder voice and represent my community.” She found that opportunity when she stepped into the Executive Director role at Diversity Cornwall, as long-time volunteer leader Liz Quenville, who oversaw most of the organization’s operations for years, prepares to conclude her term as president at the end of the month. “It blows my mind that she’s been able to keep this organization running for that long on a volunteer basis,” McCutcheon said.
