Ottawa-based artist Violeta Borisonik is exhibiting her work at the Cline House Gallery’s Creative Conservatory sunroom through April 11.
Known for her expressive paintings and distinctive jewellery designs, Borisonik’s work blends her background in architecture with a passion for fine arts. Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, she has made Canada her home for many years, developing a multidisciplinary practice rooted in composition and design.
“My background is in architecture, and I also studied fine arts,” Borisonik said. “I’m a mixed media artist who loves to work with colour and texture, and I’m also a jewellery designer working in sterling silver and freshwater pearls.”
Her paintings, ranging from florals to landscapes and urban-inspired compositions, are marked by bold palettes and geometric structure. That architectural influence is intentional, she explained.
“Most of my work, especially urban landscapes, has a strong geometric composition,” she said. “I always think about design and composition first. If the composition is strong, the viewer will stop and take a closer look.”
Rather than striving for realism, Borisonik approaches her work through imagination, allowing colour and form to guide each piece.
“I’m not a photorealist artist. I work mainly from imagination,” she said. “Even when I use references, it’s never about copying-it’s about creating something new.”
That same philosophy extends to her jewellery, where she draws inspiration from modernist design principles.
“I’m influenced by the Bauhaus movement, with its focus on structure and simplicity,” Borisonik said. “I like combining geometric forms with something organic, like pearls. It creates a balance between hard edges and natural elements.”
The exhibition also marks her first time showing at Cline House, a gallery she has followed from afar.
“I think the gallery is doing a great job with its programming and community activities,” she said. “It’s really nice to be part of it.”
