The Cornwall and Area Pop Event returned to the Benson Centre, drawing crowds for a weekend of celebrity guests, artists, vendors, and cosplay.
Held annually, CAPE has grown into one of the region’s most anticipated events, bringing together fans of film, television, comics, and gaming. Organizer Randy Sauve said the focus remains on variety and accessibility. “Carol and I focus each year on bringing the best selection of pop culture vendors along with a mix of fantastic local cosplayers and a unique selection of featured guests that are not common to this area,” he said, noting the event continues to expand its reach each year.
Among this year’s guests was voice actress Melissa Altro, known for her role as Muffy on Arthur. She said meeting fans was a highlight of her first CAPE appearance. “Everybody’s been really friendly and nice, and it’s been a great experience so far,” Altro said. She added that many interactions were deeply personal. “They mostly just want to tell me how much they love the show and what it means to them. It reminds them of their childhood and just makes them feel happy,” she said.
Actress Casey Hartnett also praised the reception in Cornwall and the opportunity to connect with fans outside major urban centres. “It’s been really lovely. Everyone’s super friendly,” she said. “It’s nice to be in Canada and somewhere outside of the main cities to get more of a feel of the real Canada.” Hartnett said many fans were curious about her role in Terrifier 2, particularly its graphic scenes. “They ask about filming the gory scenes because there’s a lot of practical effects,” she said, noting the experience was far less frightening than audiences might expect. “A lot of people assume it was a scary experience, but we had a really great time. David Howard Thornton, who plays Art the Clown, is super friendly.”
Cosplay remained a major part of the weekend, with attendees of all ages dressing as their favourite characters from movies, anime, and comics. The event featured a lineup of cosplay guests and a cosplay contest, adding to the visual spectacle and interactive atmosphere that has become a hallmark of CAPE.
Beyond celebrity appearances, the event showcased a strong lineup of artists and exhibitors. Longtime participant James Lapierre said the sense of community keeps him returning each year. “The excitement, the camaraderie, the energy is just fantastic,” he said, pointing to the mix of vendors, artists, and cosplayers.
Fellow exhibitor Neil Carriere described CAPE as a cornerstone of the local arts scene. “It’s one of the most important events that Cornwall has all year. It’s my favourite event,” he said. Carriere added that interactive elements, like caricature drawings, help create lasting memories for attendees. “Everybody likes being drawn as a cartoon. It makes them laugh and it’s a nice little keepsake people can take home.”
With over 4500 attendees, CAPE continues to build on its reputation as a family-friendly celebration of pop culture in Cornwall.
