The new 70+ Summer Lob Pitch Softball league has officially launched at Optimist Ball Park in Cornwall, bringing together older adults for recreation, exercise, and camaraderie. The Tuesday afternoon league, running through Aug. 25, already has two full teams and a waiting list as interest continues to grow.
In the inaugural game, Team Blue edged Team Red 12-10, with Bernie Driscoll named MVP.
The idea for the league came from local organizer Ken Sliter, who wanted to reconnect older adults with a sport many grew up playing. “We thought, let’s just get together and play again,” said Sliter, who played minor baseball and later suited up for the Hodgins Lumber Huskies.
Currently, 21 players are registered, including one woman. Sliter hopes more women will join in the future. “I think she’s going to be a trailblazer for us,” he said. Players still interested in joining can register through the Benson Centre and be added to a waiting list. If enough interest develops, two additional teams could be formed. The recreational league emphasizes fun over results. “There’s no such thing as an error in our league,” Sliter added. “You come out, you miss a ball, so what? Pick it up and throw the ball. We want people to enjoy themselves.”
