Students, families, educators, and community agencies gathered in Cornwall for Together for Transitions, a free regional transition fair focused on supporting students with disabilities and diverse learning needs as they prepare for life beyond high school.
Jointly organized by the Upper Canada District School Board and Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario, the event took place at Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School.
The fair, which was also held in Kemptville, featured information booths, community resources, and sensory-friendly presentations designed to help students and caregivers better understand available supports related to employment, post-secondary education, independent living, healthcare, and developmental services.
“We hosted two transition events for students with disabilities and their families to come together,” said Julie Symonds, Principal of Special Education with the UCDSB. “Most importantly, community agencies will help support students through the transition beyond high school.”
Symonds explained that the fairs supported students with a wide range of exceptionalities and disabilities, including autism, developmental delays, physical disabilities, and medical needs. She said transition planning often involves helping students develop skills that support success in workplaces, community programs, or post-secondary education.
Organizations participating in the fairs included Beyond 21, Special Olympics, Valoris, Developmental Services Ontario, and other agencies from across Eastern Ontario.
Symonds said approximately 100 students and family members attended the events throughout the week. “Every student’s transition is very unique to their circumstances,” she said. “Lots of opportunities and pathways lead to a variety of opportunities.”
She encouraged families with questions about transition planning to connect with their child’s school to begin discussions early and help students prepare for successful futures beyond high school.
