Alexandria business owner Cody Pierce is running for Mayor of North Glengarry in the upcoming municipal election.
Originally from Cornwall, Pierce believes that everyone should try hard to find success, proven by his Alexandria Customs recent recognition as Business of the Year in North Glengarry.
Pierce believes that the mayor should be open to communication and be a symbol as a community leader. He said it’s easy to complain but feels he is ready to take action and fill the cracks in the system to get things done as soon as possible. As mayor, Pierce says he would take the time for face-to-face meetings, visiting businesses once or twice a month, asking, “What can I do for you?”
Pierce’s vision of the future of Alexandria includes growth, promoting it as an affordable place to live and work for young people to set their careers in motion. He says all too often, young people are resented by older workers if they try hard. He wants to prove that everyone should try hard and he is willing to be a punching bag to prove his point.
Pierce hopes to see the revitalization of Island Park, with more attention paid to the landscaping on the smaller islands and the potential hiring of a full-time lifeguard for the beach. Another concern is that the aging population of Alexandria is out of balance. He feels that if younger people aren’t drawn to the town, lowering the median age, there won’t be anyone to take care of the seniors, and their quality of retirement will decline. Pierce also feels there lacks disaster planning in the area, especially for older residents. He wonders who will connect with these people if the power goes out and cell towers go down.
Pierce says his supporters know he is a sincere person and he is ready to expand his energy to help make Alexandria a paradise with strong community spirit. He says his ambition, vision and effort will make up for his lack of experience in municipal government. Pierce says he only needs a few hundred votes to win because voter turnout has been so small lately, with young voters feeling they have no say.
Pierce believes by having 200 conversations with potential voters, and those voters talk to others, he will successfully challenge incumbent Jamie MacDonald. “It’s done, it’s sealed,” said Pierce. “It’s almost guaranteed to happen as long as I don’t mess it up.”
