Cornwall Councillor Maurice Dupelle announced he will not seek re-election in the 2026 municipal election, ending a 16-year run on City Council.
He made the announcement during the Cornwall Youth Ambassador Committee presentation at the most recent council meeting. “I was elected 16 years ago, and I’m not running again. I’m going to end my career as a politician,” said Dupelle, becoming emotional during his remarks. “I headed the Cornwall Youth Advisory Committee back then, and my goal was to get youth involved in our community,” he continued. “You guys are a prime example of it. I can’t thank you enough for this. Continue doing what you’re doing and continue to focus on moving forward.” The announcement follows a challenging final term marked by attendance issues and public scrutiny. In September 2025, council suspended his pay for 90 days after an Integrity Commissioner investigation related to absenteeism and failure to complete required cybersecurity training. Integrity Commissioner David Boghosian’s report also examined concerns surrounding Dupelle soliciting more than $30,000 in personal loans from constituents and city staff, though only the training issue was determined to be a Code of Conduct violation.
Council also removed Dupelle from the Cornwall Police Services Board, Eastern Ontario Health Unit, and Glen Stor Dun Lodge Committee of Management, citing ongoing concerns about attendance and engagement. Dupelle previously attributed his absences to health and personal challenges. Dupelle joins Councillors Sarah Good, Carilyne Hébert, and Claude McIntosh in not seeking another term when elections are held Oct. 26. According to the latest posted nominations, Mayor Justin Towndale is seeking re-election, with Nicole Spahich also running for mayor. Council candidates include incumbents Denis Sabourin and Elaine MacDonald, along with Tobias Legros, Joël Côté, Jason Riley, Mary Jane Proulx, and Carol Boileau. The nomination period remains open until Aug. 21 at 2 p.m.
