The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) is voicing strong opposition to a proposed large-scale data centre development at the former Alcoa East industrial site in Massena, New York, citing concerns about environmental impacts, energy use, and inadequate consultation with Indigenous communities.
MCA said it supports the responsible redevelopment of former industrial lands but does not believe the current proposal sufficiently addresses the potential long-term impacts on Akwesasne lands, waters, environment, or community members.
Council identified several major concerns related to the proposed project, including the site’s proximity to Akwesasne, the substantial energy and water demands required to operate the facility, potential strain on local power infrastructure, and possible noise and environmental impacts linked to continuous industrial operations.
MCA also stated there has been “limited information provided regarding the full scope and long-term impact of the project,” adding that the process to date has lacked adequate transparency and meaningful consultation.
“The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne maintains that any development within or near our territory must respect the rights, responsibilities, and jurisdiction of the Mohawks of Akwesasne, including the protection of our environment and future generations,” the statement said.
Massena has increasingly become a hub for large-scale data and cryptocurrency mining operations due to its access to hydroelectric power generated along the St. Lawrence River. The former Alcoa East site already houses major digital infrastructure operations, including facilities associated with Coinmint and North Country Collocation Services (NCCS).
Developers affiliated with NYDIG and NCCS have proposed a major expansion at the site that would reportedly include three buildings totaling nearly 1.5 million square feet. The project is estimated to require approximately 635 megawatts of electricity, a figure that has raised concerns locally because of its potential demand on regional power resources.
MCA emphasized that while it recognizes the importance of economic development and regional investment, such projects “must not come at the expense of environmental integrity, community well-being, or the health and safety of Mohawk people.”
