The Maxville abd District Horticultural Society annual plant auction was a huge success and the best to date, according to co-presidents, Glenda Villeneuve and Vivian Franklin.
The sale raised $2,600, which will be matched by Scotiabank to increase funds available for plant materials for planter boxes, gardens and hanging pots.
The society’s efforts stretch beyond planter boxes and the famous Max the Piper’s garden at the village entrance. The group also holds informative and educational meetings encouraging gardening for better health and mental wellness, for environmental benefits and even for increasing property values. The group also arranges tours for members and a garden show at Maxville Manor each summer,.
Partnering with the Township of North Glengarry, members of arrange for 36 hanging baskets, and Township staff ensures the flowers are watered. The plants are provided by Serres D. Parisien, in Bourget. “The plants Daniel Parisien uses are heat tolerant and as he has ready access to them in spring, they are well established once we get them,” said Franklin, “Even with the Township watering, we need tough baskets! And the colours are always fantastic.”
