The St. Joseph Catholic Secondary School Panthers junior football team capped off its season with a championship victory, defeating the Casselman Dynamos 40-22.
The win came after a challenging stretch in which St. Joseph went three weeks without a game due to forfeits by La Citadelle and Embrun. Despite concerns about a lack of game action, the Panthers showed no signs of rust in the championship contest.
“We were a little worried not having much team time,” said coach Mitch Zappitelli. “But we did some intersquad exhibitions, and I think that helped a lot to keep the kids fresh.”
Quarterback Bryce Camplin helped lead the offence, while team captain Jaxson Bernique, a receiver and defensive back, made key contributions. Zappitelli added Bernique caught “a couple long bombs” and also played an important role on special teams. Camplin said the Panthers excelled on both sides of the ball. “Our offence was pretty unstoppable throughout the game, and the defence played great as well,” he said, adding that winning the championship after falling short last year felt “amazing.” Following the win, Zappitelli praised his players’ commitment and said the championship group bodes well for the future. “We’re excited these players will join us for senior next year, and hopefully we’ll continue the momentum.”
