Cornwall’s youth ambassadors shared their first year of work with City Council during a recent regular meeting, highlighting efforts to increase youth involvement.
The Cornwall Youth Ambassador Committee (CYAC) was created after Council approved the program on Sept. 22, 2025. Introduced by Mayor Justin Towndale, the initiative builds on the former Youth Advisory Committee by giving students a stronger voice in municipal discussions.
The 2025-2026 ambassadors are Méya Cheffer (La Citadelle), Raid Louafi (L’Héritage), Saanvi Uniyal (St. Joseph’s), Hudson Gibbs (Holy Trinity), Marie-Eve Vernier (CCVS), and Rodiat Abass (St. Lawrence).
“We get to speak up for our school, for our opinions on different things in Cornwall,” said Cheffer, who explained CYAC aims to make the city more inclusive for teenagers.
Gibbs said the group learned from several municipal departments throughout the year. “They all really cared about their job, so that was pretty cool to see,” he said.
Members also participated in 2026 municipal election radio ads and toured City services. The committee thanked City staff for their support, including special recognition for Farhana Meghji. Members of Council praised the presentation and the work of the student ambassadors.
