The weather is being blamed for a reduced surplus projection for the Upper Canada District School Board.
Chief Business Officer Jeremy Hobbs recently told trustees that on revenues of $468 million and expenses of $467.8 million, the board is looking at a surplus of $200,000. In a January update, Hobbs had reported projected revenues of $470.2 million and expenses of $469.7 million for a surplus of $500,000. Hobbs explained that the reduced surplus “was driven primarily by the challenging winter and subsequent increases in snow removal and utility costs.”
As the end of the fiscal year approaches, he noted that staff will continue to monitor and adjust spending activity in light of current and emerging uncertainties. Definitive financial results for 2025-26 will be presented in November. Looking ahead to the 2026-27 Preliminary Budget Outlook, Hobbs touched on factors such as a projected transportation deficit caused by funding changes, and potential changes to special education funding.
