The Ontario government is investing $435,829 to help restore degraded areas of the St. Lawrence River near Cornwall and Akwesasne, as part of a broader $7.3 million commitment to protect the Great Lakes and connecting waterways.
The St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences will lead the local initiative, focusing on ecological monitoring, research, and public education. Supported by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, projects include water quality sampling, evaluating fish and wildlife consumption advisories, tracking algae effects, and building a digital pollution map.
“The St. Lawrence River is the lifeforce of our community,” said Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry MPP Nolan Quinn. “Our government is ensuring it is protected so future generations can continue to benefit.”
Mayor Justin Towndale emphasized the river’s historic and economic importance, while River Institute Executive Director Jeff Ridal highlighted the role of collaboration in restoration efforts.
