It was a morning of big smiles and bigger plays at Optimist Park as members of the Cornwall Police Service’s Crime Reduction & Community Partnerships team hit the diamond with the Beyond 21 All Stars for a friendly game of softball on September 18.
The game was part of Beyond 21’s inclusive baseball initiative supported by the Jays Care Foundation. “The Jays Care program has been vital for the participants at Beyond 21 in socializing and gaining confidence,” said Jill Underwood, Beyond 21 Baseball Coach. “Everyone loved meeting new people and seeing familiar faces from the community.”
Beyond 21 provides dayprograms and supports for adults with developmental disabilities, helping them build life, social, and vocational skills.
Sgt. Dave MacLean of CPS called the experience one of the most rewarding parts of community policing. “For CPS members, it’s always a special time playing softball with everyone at Beyond 21… it’s a time when everyone wins!”
Amy Malyon, Executive Director of Beyond 21, added, “We are fortunate to have the support of the Jays Care Foundation… and what better way to celebrate than inviting some community friends to play a game with us.”
