The Glengarry Historical Societies Speakers Series is underway. Our second speaker of the series is one of Glengarries very own fiddlers, Donaldson MacLeod. Donaldson will be giving two short presentations at the Sports Palace in Alexandria on the evening of Wednesday, October 1st. They are about two of Canada’s great engineering feats; the construction of the highway that supported The James Bay Project and the construction of the Trans-Canada highway system.
Donaldson, who holds a PhD in Engineering, was the Project Manager for the James Bay Project for five years. His visual presentation highlights the difficulties faced when building highway systems in the North and the ingenious ideas that stemmed from it, many of which became “firsts” in Canada. These will be sure to surprise you. They did me!
Two years ago, Donaldson was approached by The Transportation Association of Canada to put together a presentation about the history of the building of the Trans-Canada highway. For the second half of his presentation, he will be sharing with us this history (the condensed version) and some interesting tidbits about what kinds of shenanigans were happening behind the scenes.
Join us as we learn (and perhaps giggle a bit) about how these two grand projects have shaped our lives.
This presentation will be on Wednesday, October 1st, at 7:00 p.m. at the Michel Depratto Hall of the Glengarry Sports Palace, Alexandria. For non-members, tickets are $10 and for members, $5. Light refreshments, tea/coffee and snacks will be available.
The next speaker of our series will be Alexander Campbell. The title of this presentation is “Highlanders & Islanders of Glengarry: From Pointe Beaudette to Long Sault .” This will take place on THURSDAY, November 6th, at 7:00 p.m., at the Char-Lan Recreation Center, 19740 John St. in Williamstown.
