Dear Editor
Please allow me the time to share my experience in the park on Labour Day weekend. We are so used to hearing of all the negative things going on at the park but I have a lovely story with a happy ending.
My partner Sharon and I walked to the park on Labor Day to see what was going on and when we arrived, we found quite a few people around the bandshell and they were drawing numbers for prizes. We were sitting near the back of the park in front of several people that were looking after a tent. One person from the tent heard his number drawn and proceeded to the bandshell and returned with a beautiful child’s 2 wheel bicycle equipped with training wheels. After he sat down, Sharon mentioned to me if I thought he would be interested in selling it as she mentioned she would buy it for her great granddaughter.
I then walked over to see if he would sell it and he was willing to sell it for $50. I asked him if there was a banking machine here and he said “not really”. I thanked him for his time and went back to my table and continued sitting there for another 20 minutes or so. When we decided to leave and were getting up, this gentleman got up and pushed the bike towards us and asked if the bike was for our great granddaughter. We told him yes, and the next thing we knew, he gave us the bike and told us to tell her to enjoy it.
After Sharon hugged him and thanked him, I shook his hand and asked him his name and all he said was he goes by Rick and some of his friends call him Bacon Bits. He mentioned he was in the Optimist Club and he loves children.
If we can find Rick, I am sure our great granddaughter would like to thank him personally. As I mentioned at the start, so much negativity goes on and now something good to talk about. Rick should be recognized for this wonderful act and being a former Optimist member, I know what the Optimist motto is. The motto is “a friend of youth”. Wow Rick, you sure practised what you preach. From the bottom of our hearts Rick, thank you and may God bless.
