A 56-year-old Cornwall man faces several charges after a stolen car struck and destroyed a hydro pole on County Road 2 east of Cornwall October 14.
When officers with the Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the scene near Simser Road, they found a car had left the roadway and struck a hydro pole, completely shearing it off, leaving power lines hanging approximately a metre above the road. Witnesses reported seeing a man get out of the car and flee on foot.
Initially, officers wanted to ensure the individual was okay following the crash, but officers also learned that the vehicle had been reported stolen.
The OPP Canine Unit located the suspect who had no serious injuries as a result of the crash but was transported to hospital as a precaution.
Richard Zeran has been charged with theft of a vehicle, dangerous operation, operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code, failing to remain at the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident.
The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Alexandria December 3.
