The 2025 Over the Edge fundraiser brought adrenaline and altruism to downtown Cornwall on September 20, as brave participants rappelled nearly 100 feet down the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation building to raise over $54,000 (and counting) for local programs. Hosted by United Way SDG, the event’s third edition drew hundreds of onlookers on a cool sunny day.
Participant Haleema Chaudhry, who works with both the Social Development Council and United Way, said she felt compelled to take part. “I’ve seen firsthand what United Way does for homelessness and poverty. I wanted to give back,” she explained. “Once my feet felt balanced, I felt like I could do anything.”
Chaudhry also reflected on the sweeping sights from the rooftop. “The view was immaculate. I could see Akwesasne, the water tower, the clock tower, and I even spotted my house. It reminded me how connected we all are.”
Campaign and Communications Coordinator Stephanie Lapointe noted that the number of participants had grown to about 50 this year. “People keep wanting to go over the edge and show up for their community,” she said. “This is a celebration of people who conquer fears and give back.”
Interim Executive Director Raymond Houde added, “What I appreciate is that all the money raised stays in this community. It supports programs in housing, mental health, and food security.”
