The Hindu Gujarati community of Cornwall hosted its Grand Navratri celebration at the Benson Centre for the third straight year, filling the turf with colour, music, and prayer. The nine-day Hindu festival, which began September 28, honours Goddess Durga and the triumph of good over evil.
Over 300 residents and visitors took part over the weekend, circling in lively Garba and Raas steps, pausing for evening aarti, and sharing plates of authentic Gujarati snacks and sweets. Families arrived in beaded chaniya cholis and embroidered kurtas, while a lamp-lit shrine framed the dance floor.
“The event was a great success, and we got really good feedback from the community,” said organizer Binal Bhavsar. “This festival means a lot to our community. It is the most celebrated and awaited festival of the year.”
Bhavsar credited the volunteer team for seamless logistics, from décor to music to food service. “We are so grateful that around 300 people joined us this year. We hope to continue this year over year and bring our community together during our festivities,” she added.
