Parliament is back in session in Ottawa, and Canadians are looking for results as our country faces a series of crises and challenges. As Members of Parliament return to the House of Commons, my Conservative colleagues and I are focused on one clear mission: bringing home lower prices, safer streets, and the leadership our country needs. Canadians continue to face rising costs on everything from groceries to housing. Families are being squeezed while this government doubles down on high taxes and wasteful spending. Meanwhile, violent crime and repeat offences continue to rise, leaving many communities feeling less safe. These are real issues that deserve real solutions – not more photo ops. Over the past months, Conservatives have not just held the government to account on the promises the Liberals made during the recent election campaign, but we have been proposing our own positive solutions to address food prices, crime rates, and getting new homes built. For example, Conservatives are calling for the Liberals to tackle the rising cost of groceries- which are increasing well above the average rate of inflation- by removing several hidden taxes ‘baked’ into food prices like the industrial carbon tax paid by our farmers, the food packaging tax on plastic and packaging, and to cancel the Liberal’s planned “fuel standard” tax of an extra 17 cents a litre on the price of gas by 2030. On crime, Conservatives had proposed a suite of tough on crime measures like the “Jail not Bail” Act for repeat, violent offenders, and several other Bills tackling intimate partner violence, sex offenders, and mandatory jail time for serious, repeat criminals. On the housing front, we want to lower the cost of building by removing the GST on new homes built under $1.3 million. That would save new homeowners up to $65,000 and thousands in mortgage costs annually, which would lower the cost of building instantly. Further, we would cut development charges in Canada and tie municipal funding in big cities to the number of permits for new units to increase housing so we can keep up with our population demands. In this session, Conservatives will keep pushing these solutions. We will also hold the government accountable for its mismanagement of immigration and housing programs, and its refusal to offer a plan to balance the budget. Canadians have had enough of excuses. It’s time for a government that makes life affordable, restores trust in our institutions, and delivers results for working people. That’s what we’ll be fighting for every day in Parliament this fall – because Canadians deserve nothing less.
