Orange Shirt Day returned to Lamoureux Park on September 30, 2025, marking its fourth year with a powerful afternoon of remembrance, education, and Indigenous cultural celebration. From 3 to 7 p.m., the community gathered to honour residential school survivors and the children who never made it home.
The event opened with the Ohen:ton Kariwatekwen Thanksgiving Address by the Akwesasne Freedom School, followed by keynote speaker Joyce King, Executive Director of the Native North American Travelling College. King spoke about the distances Akwesasne children were sent to residential schools and the trauma they endured. “Law enforcement banging on your door and forcibly removing your children… Your government trampled on and put another government in place,” said King.
The afternoon included Inuit throat singing by Lynn Toonoo and Aniqnirq Lampton, social dancing, traditional Haudenosaunee foods, and interactive exhibits on basket weaving, log pounding, and black ash flower art. A 94 Calls to Action Walk and education stations helped reinforce the message: Every Child Matters.
