The Seaway Valley Theatre Company continues its 20th anniversary season with Norm Foster’s heartwarming comedy Halfway There, running October 17 to November 2 at the Seaway Valley Theatre in Cornwall. Set in the charming town of Stewiacke, Nova Scotia, the play follows four lifelong friends whose lives are upended by the arrival of Sean, a heartbroken doctor taking a temporary job at the local clinic.
Directed by Lacie Petrynka and produced by longtime SVTC president Lise Richer, the production brings together a cast of local talent: Jamie Carr (Sean), Mari Cheffer (Rita), Lynn Covert (Vi), Colleen McKoy (Mary Ellen), and Melanie Samis (Janine).
The small-town Maritime vibe is brought to life onstage through a diner setting complete with east coast colours, mismatched mugs, and simple décor. “We’re keeping true to the script and reading it as written,” said director Lacie Petrynka. “The story is full of heart, humour, and the kind of warmth that will resonate with Cornwall audiences.”
Petrynka said a surprise rehearsal visit from playwright Norm Foster, along with David Nairn, was a thrill for the cast. “They felt very special. He reminded them, ‘Don’t forget they are real people and that you want the audience rooting for them.'”
Tickets are $30, with special Appy Hour and dinner theatre options available. Visit svtc.ca/halfwaythere for details.
