The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Department of Health (DOH) held its First Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk in the District of Kana:takon, bringing together community members to raise awareness and show support for those affected by breast cancer. Participants marched with many wearing commemorative t-shirts and carrying signs honoring loved ones.
Nurses from Community Health Services and Clinical Care Services hosted a resource table to educate attendees about the importance of regular cancer screenings. They provided details on available services and guidelines for when individuals should begin screening based on age demographics.
“The goal of the Breast Cancer Walk was to raise awareness within our community and send a message of love and hope to those currently battling the disease,” said the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne.
The MCA Department of Health’s Community Health Services also encouraged participation in the “Bling the Bra” contest for Breast Cancer Awareness. This year’s contest is in memory of the late Diane King, who helped launch the very first Bling the Bra campaign within Community Health Services.
